- John Cairns: born and raised in Belleville, On
- Upon completion from high school, became employed with Canadian National Railways.
- Instantly without any warning, all John’s goals and dreams both personally and professionally tumbled into an abyss of devastation.
- On November 30, 1992, at the age of 26, while assembling a train in Toronto yard, John was run over by a 68 ton railway car. John instantly suffered the loss of his right arm and right leg.
- After four months recovery at Sunnybrook Trauma Center, John spent the next two years at the Worker’s Compensation Rehabilitation Center, re-learning activities of daily living all over again, all while losing his right-side dominance.
- Through the efforts of his team specialists and John’s own self-determination, his spiritual faith, empathy for others, has adopted a winning attitude.
- John has dedicated his life to enhancing the quality of people’s lives by sharing his own experiences, to empower, to inspire and be a lighthouse of encouragement. His desire to make a difference and give back, has led John to speak to thousands of people in all walks of life as a motivational speaker.
- John regularly visits patients and their families in hospitals; injecting hope, boosting morale and provides a human touch of encouragement towards their recovery.
- Currently, John is in his third year of studies at the University of Waterloo in the Social Development Studies program. John's new roads became paved with a passion and desire to make a difference which led John to become a member with the Rotary Club of Belleville. John is currently the President of The Rotary Club of Belleville, Ont. John is a past Director and Alumni with the Quinte Health Care Board of Directors.
- John enjoys participating in various sports; most recently snow-boarding, down-hill skis, swims, rides his bicycle - runs in the 10K Terry Fox Marathons and plays squash! John is a certified advanced scuba-diver and has his sights on learning to skydive!
